What is the common denominator between Beyoncé and the Musée du Quai Branly Jacques Chirac ? There is not really any And yet, Queen B and the Parisian institution are showcasing afro-american culture, each in their own way...

In her latest album, Mrs Carter claims her black heritage with strong vibes, while the Museum is spotlighting the « Color Line ». Still quite unknown in France, this term refers to the « color line », concretely the discrimination, that divided Blacks and Whites in the United Sates after the Civil War.

At the time, the abolition of slavery did not solve everything, far from it. Here is the proof with 600 works and documents presented in a fascinating venue on the struggle of African-Americans (as they are referred to today in the U.S.) up until the effective recognition of their rights and even beyond.

Paintings, photos, texts, films, during all these years, artists never stopped pinpointing inequalities, injustices and racism through their art. Food for thought...
