Just 20 minutes by public transport or less than a 10-minute drive from the Château de Versailles, the newly opened Dolce by Wyndham Versailles hotel is nestled in the charming town of Jouy-en-Josas. Once abandoned, the former residence of the creator of the iconic Toile de Jouy has been beautifully restored, offering a serene escape surrounded by lush greenery and forest. A true change of scenery awaits!
Once Upon a Time…
The Domaine de Montcel has a rich history, having lived through many lives before becoming this 4-star hotel. Originally the château of Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf—the creator of Toile de Jouy—it later became a boarding school for boys from noble families, and even housed the Fondation Cartier for contemporary art. During World War II, it was occupied by the Nazis, and a bunker from that time still remains in a corner of the park. The Dolce by Wyndham Versailles hotel has retained traces of its past, visible throughout the estate, including the Château, the historic wing, and the 19th-century Chalet, all of which have been meticulously renovated to offer charming attic rooms, some with terraces overlooking the gardens.
Floral wallpapers, wooden paneling, and Toile de Jouy adorn the 178 rooms, suites, and apartments spread across the estate, blending tradition with modern comfort to create a timeless appeal for all guests. Nature lovers will be enchanted by a stay in the Village des Arts, with its charming cottages reminiscent of Beauty and the Beast’s village, complete with greenery and a picturesque stream. Insider tip: request a room with a breathtaking view of the park from your bed.
For those who can tear themselves away from their cozy beds, the breakfast room offers panoramic views of the estate, with a full buffet featuring local and seasonal products. Another top spot: the large terrace of Le Cèdre, where you can sip one of their signature cocktails (try the "Oberkampf" with vodka, St Germain, lemonade, rose syrup, Tabasco, and lemon, €19) while enjoying the garden view.
A Peaceful Sanctuary
The Domaine du Montcel is tucked away in the heart of the Bièvre Valley and its surrounding forest, which extends into the estate’s park. This 14-hectare haven of bucolic gardens is perfect for a leisurely stroll or following the stream to the small pond, with stops to admire the monumental sculptures by César and Arman.
Prefer a more relaxing experience? Spend a few hours at the Sothys spa, located in one of the estate’s wings, which features a beautiful indoor and outdoor pool, hammam, sauna, sensory shower, and fitness room. Note: there’s an additional €25 fee for 2 hours of access to these wellness areas, in addition to the nightly rate.
To get there, take the RER C to Versailles Chantiers station, then transfer to the Jouy-en-Josas station, or drive via the A86 towards Vélizy. Rooms start at €230 per night. Information and booking online.
