If you liked All that glitters and Girlhood, you will adore Divines, the film that received a 10 minute standing ovation after its presentation at the Cannes Film Festival.
The pitch? A tandem worthy of the greatest films (think of Laurel & Hardy), two BFF, Maimounia (Déborah Lukumuena), a tall sensitive “black girl” and Dounia (Oulaya Amamra), a petite feline “North African” are bored in their suburb with not much as life perspectives.
They decide to offer their services to Rebecca (Jisca Kalvanda), a respected dealer in their neighbourhood. The goal? Make some “money money money” and get out of their looser district, heading for a tantalizing future where they dream of escapades to Thailand, sports cars and well built toy boys. Very quickly, they are swept away in a whirlwind of violence...
In Divines, the world, generally so masculine, becomes feminine through already cult punch lines such as “You got clitoris, I like it” and reversed situations. Femininity seems to reside in the one and only person of Djigui, a great looking dancer canon who the gals observe while he’s secretly rehearsing...
