WRITING A NEW CHAPTER
Spring 2020. First lockdown. Partnered with her cousin Jacques Vergnaud, Catherine Mathivat, the owner of Les Deux Magots (whose family has owned the café for 110 years), regretted that her iconic café didn't offer takeout. The idea began to take shape. All that was needed was the right concept and a perfectly suitable location. Just five minutes from the main establishment, an ideal spot became available: it was on Rue de Buci where the history of Les Deux Magots began when it was still a "novelty store."
Bingo: inaugurated on July 1st, Comptoirs Les Deux Magots serves as a chic annex, a producer's lab, and a boutique in a literature-inspired decor, where you can grab a novel to accompany your lunch or snack break.
SAINT-GERMAIN SNACKS
The counter setup gives a bakery vibe that encourages takeout, but you can also enjoy the lovely dining room and terrace to taste the new specialties, all made fresh each morning in the kitchens of Les Deux Magots. The baguette sandwiches are irresistible, kept crispy under a warming light and assembled to order: the Ernest with chicken, tapenade, and eggplant (€9.50), the Albert with Maison Vérot ham and crunchy salad (€8.50), or the Marguerite with Brie de Meaux (€9). Another success is the addictive quiche Lorraine (€7).
But the real stars of Comptoirs are the Mini Carrés, baby sandwiches on sandwich bread that you can mix and match by the box of 4 (€12), featuring excellent options like Petrossian smoked salmon with lemon cream or crab with fresh herbs and mayo. The desserts are equally delightful, with financiers available in sets of 4 (€12), with chocolate and pistachio being top favorites. Also cool: the surprisingly light tarte tatin (€6).
