Christophe Nicolat Biot gloss care

It’s the phenomenon taking the beauty world by storm. A true joker to show off shinier hair than ever, the hair gloss is now on the treatment menu of our favorite salons. Among them, the star hairdresser Christophe Nicolas Biot (who styles the cuts and colors of Emmanuelle Seigner, Isabelle Huppert, and Laetitia Casta, no less) helped us understand the trendiest glam of the moment.

What is hair gloss?

If gloss makes lips as shiny as desired, the hair version promises the same (on the head, this time!) for mirror-like locks. With the rise of healthy, glowy, and natural hair, this technique focuses on shine without the chemical aggression of permanent dyes. From his Germanopratin salon, Christophe Nicolas Biot explains: “Gloss is a color revival that brings light to the hair.” Becoming a favorite among it-girls and low-maintenance enthusiasts, hair gloss offers a wow effect without visible effort.

“A gloss is designed to revive color, whether it’s chemical or natural. That’s precisely what makes it so interesting!” says the scissor ace. In other words, gloss is like makeup for the hair, adapting to everyone to give a boost between dyes. The pioneer of natural products further explains: “What I find interesting about gloss is that it can be applied at any time of the year. With us, we offer it between two colors or after lightening to create soft shades and bring out brightness.”

Why do we love it? For its ultra-natural effect but especially because it avoids marking roots. “The true nature of gloss is that it should not oxidize or alter the base. It should simply bring extra light and a hint of reflection.” So, what’s the difference with a dye? “Originally, glosses were made with formulations mixing one-third cream, one-third ultra-light oxidant, and one-third pigments. This is completely different from dyeing, which uses one part oxidant and one part pigments.” In short, gloss is the epitome of lightness, a little fresh touch without changing the base of your hair. And for maintenance? You can relax: “For me, gloss is to be done four times a year, at most,” he reassures us.

Let’s get practical

To understand the matter in situ, we obviously tested this providential treatment. Your adventure in the Parisian hair HQ begins with a face to face with your colorist to understand your desires. Two options are available: a 100% natural vegetal gloss that gently coats and textures the hair, or the shine gloss for boosted shine and ultra-glossy reflections. Christophe specifies: “When we use the shine gloss, it is an acidic, non-alkaline dye. So, no roots: it’s a varnish that simply provides the desired tone as well as shine and brightness.”

After a 15-minute pause, it’s time to rinse, followed by shampoo and a hydrating mask (with a little scalp massage for pleasure). Everything is done very quickly, and as the king Christophe Nicolas Biot points out: “Gloss represents between 20 and 25% of all colorations with us, as it is a quick, light service that can be done at any time.”

Next, a quick pre-drying before moving on to treatments: a leave-in treatment to nourish and protect your lengths, an anti-frizz, and you’re ready for the styling of your choice. Smooth blow-dry or wavy curls, the result is always top-notch.

Nota bene: Hair show fans won’t want to miss his big show, “a very large show in front of 3,000 people at the Porte de Versailles, on October 13,” announces the creator of the famous Bar à Chignon Minute as a bonus.
