The secrets of a beautiful blowout

What could be more challenging than creating a beautiful blowout at home? We asked the blowout king, Hovig Etoyan, whose salon near the Luxembourg Gardens is always bustling, to share his secrets for achieving the same blowouts at home... in our own bathrooms! How to choose the right brush ? Should you use hairspray ? Double shampooing – is it necessary ? What thermal protection to use ? Find the answers here !

Shampooing : How to go about it ?

When it comes to the type of shampoo to use, choose it based on your hair type, color, and texture. However, the key lies in hydration. The better-prepared and nourished your hair is, the more stunning your blowout will be ! No need for a double shampoo unless you feel the emulsion is insufficient – indicating that the sebum layer is too thick and needs to be redone.

Precautions before blow-drying ?

Don't be fooled: achieving a beautiful blowout is complex ! The technique varies depending on hair thickness and texture. For fine hair, use a thermal protector (preferably a spray) and a texturizing product before drying to add volume. Then, use a hairdryer on low heat and speed.

For thick hair, it's almost the opposite. Use a thermal protector (preferably a cream) and pre-dry to 60% moisture (keep it slightly damp!) before starting the blowout to avoid spending too much time and getting arm cramps.

Which brush to choose ?

Choose your brush carefully, and the choice depends on your hair length. The longer your hair, the thicker the round brush should be. The idea is for the hair to truly wrap around the brush !

Your foolproof technique ?

Blow-drying is done step by step. Start by dividing your hair into 4 sections with a middle part down to the bottom and a second part from ear to ear. It's ideal to use clips on the 4 sections to simplify the process. Begin with the back sections to prevent dry hair from touching the wet part – if the nape is too wet, the blowout may break. The goal is zero humidity! Then, dry the hair from the roots to the tips while turning the brush. Note that the thickness of the section should not be larger than the brush! Once all 4 sections are blown out, take the front part (not the sides), lift it with your hand to add more volume.

My tip : the hairdryer should be positioned behind the brush, above it. This way, the heat is evenly distributed, and the hair is dried to the tips. For dense hair, use high speed with high heat. For fine hair, prefer low speed with low heat. Personally, I swear by Dyson or GHD.

Tips for a flawless finish ?

Once your beautiful blowout is ready, apply a bit of anti-frizz serum from mid-length to the tips. I repeat: the key to a radiant blowout is first having well-hydrated hair. It may not be necessary to use hairspray, as it can stiffen the hair, limiting its natural movement. The beauty of hair lies in its movement !
