7 stylish creperies to celebrate Candlemas

They say that not eating crêpes on Chandeleur brings bad luck. No better excuse to indulge in the coolest crêperies in Paris. Between traditional buckwheat galettes, galette-saucisse, indulgent crêpes with salted butter caramel, and chic truffle galettes, there's something for everyone!

L'Atelier Artisan Crêpier

The place: beautiful parquet flooring, comfy rattan armchairs and sofas, globe wall lights, cascading plants, cement tiles, and marble-effect tables: the Mabillon restaurant highlights the current interior design obsessions, far from the clichés of old-fashioned Breton crêperies, with LOL posters and a chill vibe that makes you feel good.

The signature: the Arsène with truffled ham, free-range egg, and emmental (€13.50) or the Jean with free-range eggs, spinach, goat cheese log, bacon, and fresh cream (€13.50), to be washed down with delicious artisanal ciders and perries. Sweet tooths won't be able to resist the indulgent crêpes like the nostalgic Josiane with homemade dark chocolate (by Michel Cluizel, please, €9.50) or the excellent Marine with raspberries, Sicilian pistachio ice cream, drizzled with red fruit coulis, and homemade whipped cream (€9.50). Mmmmh!

The plus: no need to break the bank on a train ticket to Brittany. The ultimate charm of L'Atelier Artisan Crêpier is its unbeatable lunch deals with galette + crêpe + glass of cider or apple juice (€16.90 for simple Tradition recipes, €21.90 for more complex Exception recipes).

L'Atelier Artisan Crêpier, 10 rue Mabillon, Paris 6e, 01 43 26 30 05, open Monday to Thursday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to midnight, Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to midnight, and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

La Cantine Bretonne

The place: perched by the Canal de l'Ourcq, the team behind Simonetta and Maison Becquey dives into food porn made in Breizh. La Cantine Bretonne reinvents the good old Bigouden crêperie in a devilishly chic setting with blue banquettes and beautiful tables.

The signature: irresistibly addictive buckwheat galettes like an upgraded galette-saucisse, as well as the ultimate Breton hot dog, elevated with onion confit, mustard sauce, and fried onions (€12.50), or the Dana with lemony goat cheese cream, sautéed apples, grated emmental and comté, honey, and walnuts (€12). A successful #bikinibody operation.

The plus: the on-site deli where you can shop for typical Breton products from top regional labels like La Maison de l'Armorine, Groix et Nature, and Marmites Lanig...

La Cantine Bretonne, 22 bis rue de l'Ourcq, Paris 19e, 01 42 00 86 09, open daily with continuous service from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Brutus

The signature: the Eliane crêpe, a wheat crêpe samosa-style filled with homemade dark chocolate, pear carpaccio, grilled almonds, and vanilla ice cream (€8.50), best enjoyed with a good brut cider (€14).

Brutus, 99 rue des Dames, Paris 17e, open Monday to Friday from 12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday from 12 p.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Breizh Café

The place: Breizh is without a doubt the story of the best crêperie in the world. No less. A success story celebrated by Le Fooding and Michelin, masterfully led by Bertrand Larcher, the Breton visionary behind "crêpes with a twist" infused with refined Japanese influences... in Japan, Cancale, Saint-Malo, and the Marais.

The signature: the amuse-galettes, 100% buckwheat galettes cut and served like maki, perfect for solo bites like the rolls with camembert, fig jam, and walnut pieces (€8)... If you prefer a more traditional service: the galette with andouille de Guéméné, onion confit with cider, sunny-side-up organic egg, AOP comté, and mustard cream (€17) is a must. More classic but divine: the sunny-side-up egg with truffled ham (€18.50) is absolutely extraordinary... Not to mention the salted butter caramel crêpe (€6.90).

The plus: the ultra-refined décor that never reminds you you're in a crêperie. Noteworthy: all dairy products and cheeses are signed Bordier. Yum…

Breizh Café, Abbesses, Canal Saint-Martin, Paul Bert, Batignolles, le Marais, Montorgueil, and Odéon, open daily from 12 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Krugen

The place: located in Belleville with a very local “Scandinavian-concrete” vibe, this gem proudly champions its regionalist slow food culture and its passion for its supplier producers, either organic (AB) or biodynamic, along with an impressive cellar of hyper-refined local ciders, beers, and whiskies.

The signature: here, traditions are elevated. Specifically: the special galette-saucisse with pure Breton pork, confit and fried onions, light mustard, and mesclun (€11), or the Tomme galette with Tomme de Savoie, farm bacon, confit onions, and mesclun (€14). For dessert: the irresistible salted butter caramel made with Krügen's own caramel (€5.70).

The plus: all desserts can be made with buckwheat flour. Addictive!

Tanguy

The place: opened in 2019 by a pure-bred hipster Breton, this adorable crêperie with pink walls combines the charm of a coffee shop with a foodie vibe. In short: the most sought-after crêperie in the 10th arrondissement.

The signature: a menu proudly showcasing its Breton roots, starting with a list of top-notch producers, including a butter artisan who also supplies Pierre Gagnaire and Olivier Roellinger. Enough said. On the menu: perfect classics like the ham-egg-tomme (€9.80), the one with andouille de Guéménée and confit onions (€13.50), or a complete with organic sausage, egg, tomme, and mustard sauce (€14). For sweet wheat crêpes: special mention to the caramel one (€6.50), perfectly balanced.

The plus: a crêperie worth hanging out at with friends past aperitif hour, thanks to the glam atmosphere, beautiful lighting, and evening soundtrack, while sipping artisanal ciders and perries, some of which, like Coat Albret Extra-Brut or Le Gorvello Héritage (at 7°), rival the best natural wines trending right now.
